Reid Fisher axed:

" What's

the best way to mount a water bottle cage (or other clamp) without damaging the paint or decals? Would coating the clamp with the rubber tool-handle goop work? Wrap with some kind of tape? Better ideas?

To which Chuck Schmidt replied:

" Years ago I used to line the inside of the clamp with a piece of clear vinyl tape and then run an Xacto blade along the perimeter of the clamp to trim excess. The clear vinyl didn't stain the paint and there was no visible evidence of the existence of the tape being under the clamp once assembled."

I did the same but used cloth handlebar tape. Old school.
