Ok, this got my curiosity going, so I dug up some headsets and tried them out. The Levin race does in fact seem to work ok, using a Campy cup and ball retainer, but it does reduce the stack height by a couple millimeters and leaves a significantly wider gap between the cup and race:

This would increase the chances of contamination, but other than that it should work ok.
