I don't know how or what to do with the dustcaps with only one hole in them: is there some Zen one-prong pin spanner that unscrews these? I don't want to muck them up, they are so shiney, a scratch would be...tragic. So, can anybody advise? (I promise to make this up by posting something on-topic next time!)

You'd be right in thinking the C-Record hubs are off topic Alan; they came out in 1985. Campagnolo made the most beautiful bright shiny chrome plated, knurled, embossed tool just for removing the hub dustcap you've ever seen!

I've got the tool and it works perfect (what else) but I've also used my fingernails to pull the dustcaps off in the past. Make sure you put some drops of Triflow™ into the groove and then place a piece of cotton t-shirt over the end of the hub, grab the dustcap by the edges at the groove with the fingernails of one hand and twist / pull at the same time. It's held by a spring clip in a groove.

You replace it by pressing and turning at the same time so it doesn't get cocked in the hole.
