This was one of a group of mostly useless changes mandated by the CPSC (Consumer Products Safety Commission) in 1977-78.

Bell shaped plastic shrouds on rear derailleur adjustment screws. - to assure that only the Campagnolo-approved, sold-to-bike-shops-only adjusting screwdriver would fit.

Shield logos on hoods - to avoid the appearance of an attempt at world domination.

really? how does changing a logo meet a safety standard? though if true, keeping a post-78 bike period will be a bit easier and less expensive than trying to find the globe hoods, though i think those do look better.

were the bell shaped plastic shrouds on both NR and SR? i actually like how those look.

Eric Acuna Santa Rosa, CA Hi Eric: I think Bob was being a little (OK, a lot) tongue-in-cheek with his post. The hood logo change occurred in about 1983, with the advent of the "script logo" calipers. It had absolutely nothing to do with the CPSC-mandated changes. It was just part of a "rationalization / re-alignment" of Corporate logos and markings. No sinister plot involved....
