Subject: [CR]What I rode as a teen

IN Detroit in 1949 and fourteen someone stole by wonderful fat tire all black Schwinn. Wish I had it back. So after waiting a week or so my Dad and I went off to nearest bike store. This was the bike store owned by Mike Walden and his Wolverine Racing club fame. One of two bike stores that carried European bicycles and English bikkes. Mike convinced me and my Dad to buy a drop handlebar flip flop rear hub single speed Rudge. He also suggested I ride with club on Wednesday evening rides which was a slow placed recovery ride out Woodward avenue . Eight lanes each side of middle divider. Wow. Then I joined the Sunday Club riders. No women just men. Wifes drove out 40 to 50 miles to meet them with lunch and all rode back in their cars. that is except Mike and I. Mike by then was 235 pounds and a very strong rider. And by then it was in 90's and very humid. Need water stop at gas station. Did I mention I rode to start of ride and back. About 20 miles total. Rode in 50's Stopped in 60's Changed Rudge to a ten speed and rode it in early 70's. Got a Cilo later and haven't stopped ridding. Charles Nighbor Walnut Creek, CA
