Sergio SERVADIO noted one other use of cycling caps:

"And to wipe forefront keeping eyes from burning. I always ride with a home-made cotton cap on: same cap all seasons."

As a follow-through that isn't purely vintage, let me summarize all this as guidelines:

1) If you share with me the joys of liberaton from skull-top hair, then some easy-to-carry cap is naearly essential for limiting sun exposure when off the bike. 2) If you are not so blessed, but still have hair up there, you might want to remember that a cap worn under the helmet blocks much of the airflow across your scalp. It helps your hair work as a blanket to shut down the highly effective heat transfer you'd get without it. Just like a windbreaker over a sweater.

Because this is connected to the cap thread, I hope it is helpful, but since it is at the edge, I'm not sure that replies should take list bandwidth - but I welcome thoughts opinions and data offline.
