Dear Eric

I have no clue on how to fix leather bar coverings. A shoe repair shop might be able to help. I presume it would have to be restitched some way.

Campy brake hoods are a constant reoccuring topic on list, and there's gobs of stuff on replacing and preserving em in the archives. But in short, the Campy brake hood is a template for many, many levers, and they were copied by many companies. Modolo, Gipiemme, Suntour Superbe, etc etc. all used the campy sized hoods. Shimano, Weinman, Galli and Universal (among others) do not fit. As far as I know, all Campy hoods will fit all Campy levers, but the wrong vintage will be pretty obvious (this applies only to the early non aero levers). Many of the copy hoods can be used on Campy levers are "users" if absolute accuracy isn't important. They will, of course, lack the Campy markings. In addition, Euro Asia makes generic brown rubber hoods that will fit, but these aren't the right shade, and have a big seam down the side.

Campy hoods come in two flavors and three colors: shield logo vs, globe logo, and black, white and gum colored. The"shield" logo hoods are newer, and can be found occasionally for sale, especially in black or white colors; the gum are rarer. The older hoods had the "globe" logo, and a NOS, undeteriorated gum colored globe logo hood is the holy grail of vintage parts. For some reason, the Campy hoods deteriorate much more rapidly than other brands, making goods one hard to find. Modolo hoods especially seem to last much longer. Modolo also made a nifty "anatomic" hood that fits Campy levers, is comfortable to hand and can be considered a functional upgrade to the standard hoods. But if you must have gum colored globe logo hoods, start saving your shekels, haunt old bike shops and become an ebay addict.

Someone once was making copies of Campy globe logo hoods, but Campy slapped em with a cease and desist letter. No new source has been located to date.

I always try to install hoods with the lever off the bar. Lubricate, and wiggle em on from the back. I use dish soap.
