Moore Brit bike history ??? during the late 40s early 50s the British Police (Old Bill if you will) would NOT allow massed start cycle racing on the public roads,Time Trials OK BUT with a BELL!! SO we had to hold our massed starts, in parks and sometimes on RAF Airdrome circuits, I was racing in a event at Halfpenny Green RAF base, during a sprint for a prime, I got tangled up with another chap and went over the top, been a green horn I put both hands out to stop myself?? and I was so pumped up with the event I straightened out the handlebars,( GB Maes of course) and released the front brake a bit to clear a buckled front wheel (Dunlop sprints and #2 tubs) and rode on the the finish, 51st I think!!! Then my Dad took me the the hospital and found both wrists broken, I still rode my bike with casts on both wrists for at least six weeks, No racing though, I did join and I was one of the first to do so, the BLRC British League of Racing Cyclist. I still have their badge. A chap in England is now selling them again,I have his Email if you want one, they started the Massed start racing on the roads with, SOMETIMES, the Police permission, In 1951 the first Tour of Britian was held (I have the Daily Express program), shows, In conjunction with and under the rules of the BRITISH LEAGUE OF RACING CYCLISTS, Won by 22 yrs old, Ian Steel ( A SCOTT YET) on a Viking bike, details of the bike he rode are on page 3 show with other details, Wire flint catcher, narrow racing saddle, double chain- ring, probably 49-46, fluted pedal crank, feed bottle cage on handlebars, hooded brake levers, quick wheel-release hollow axel,Crank,4-cog free-wheel block, his#30 was sealed!!,Gnutti also had a team, add in back shows a Gnutti cotterless crank set with the unique splined spindle and allen key, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN THE ALLEN KEY WAS STARTED, ON BIKES??? Whats a Vittoria Frame, made in Italy?? anyone know????, Cheers John Crump OldBrit, Parker Colorado USA
