My suspicion is that they were sold right at the end of the production run (circa 1987) with the already-in-production C-Record allen-head bolt, when Campagnolo was using up in-process parts. They were probably running out of the hex-head bolts, and didn't want to pay for a new run of them, especially with chrome plating and the ever-increasing environmental issues (read as: more cost) that process was beginning to entail in Europe by the mid-1980s (fasteners are typically made in mind-bogglingly large batches at one time, like maybe 50,000 pieces or more). I have no solid evidence of this, but it is a strong "hunch." Greg Parker Dexter, Michigan http://www.bicycleclassics.com

I bought one once that came new with an alloy socket-head bolt, but I always assumed that it had been upgraded. I still have it. The bolt is clear ano'd, iir.
