Hetchins were in the habit of painting the lugs in a contrasting colour on their more ornate lugged frames. This is especially true of their 80's frames. I was told by a highly regarded London frame builder that if the lugs were going to be chromium plated on a Hetchins that the extensions had to be welded on. This I was told was so that the join would not show after plating, if the tang was brazed on the chrome was not so good and you could see the join. This builder used and old spoke he told me for the welding of these extensions. He also said that Alf towards the end of his tenure at Southend used several jobbing builders for his work who always brazed the extensions on, hence the lugs being painted in the contrasting colour. This will be totally rubbished by the Hetchins lads but I ain't going to argue with this very famous highly reputed builder

Thats all for now. Keep those wheels spinning, in your memories if not still on the road. Be lucky Mick Butler Huntingdon UK.
