Mylar is available at craft and party stores, or at your local outdoor/camping supply, in the form of cheap emergency 'space' blankets. A good use for those dead mylar birthday and Valentines Day baloons too.

I always used sections of similar inner tube. Another trick that might be unique to me was a small piece of mylar drumhead bonded to the casing in the area of the puncture. As a drummer, I had a seemingly endless supply of beat to death heads and the thin, flexible mylar is incredibly strong.
