David Bilenkey noted to the list that there is a Chris Chance road frame on eBay. He wondered: " if anyone out there has seen other examples of Chris Chance road bikes and how they ride...."

I remember visiting Chris Chances' personal workshop in Boston sometime in the late seventies. There is usually an easy relationship among most custom framebuilders. He shared this space with another painter who also built occasionally. I forgot his name. They kept, I believe, separate customers. He had a very nice shop setup for both making and painting bicycle frames. I remember admiring his frame fixture which came from Witcomb USA I believe. At the time I was impressed that he was an American framebuilder very similar to myself. He nicely filed lugs - usually with some kind of design cut out. He liked to incorporate astrology themes in his work. In addition he did multicolor paint jobs. All his work appeared to be custom one off stuff. Very nice work indeed.

Later of course he developed the east coast style of MTB bikes marketed under the name of Fat Chance. I was always very curious about this transition, was it driven by changing interests, the desire for greater financial rewards, an understanding of shifting market trends?
