I remember reading an article that described Gilbert Duclos Laselle's pre-season training. From memory it was five hours alone in 52x15 five days a week !! I think he comes from the Landes, which is pan flat, but even so I can't see that he could spin that gear too fast for 100 plus miles. I guess that's the kind of power you need to win Paris-Roubaix. I've always believed that the best gear to use when training is the one that feels most comfortable but guys with zillions more wins on their palmares have trained in both ultra low and ultra high gears (graham Obree would climb hills in 52x12!) so what do I know.
