Actually, if you look closely, a double chainwheel and some "extra" derailleurs are exactly what you will see, with boxes around them, just like the boxes around the track stuff. The pic shows four cranks (two singles, two doubles, each apparently in Pitch 10 and half inch). There are two front and two rear ders depicted, one of each in white box to identify it as Pitch 10. This and some unequivocal references to forthcoming Pitch 10 road stuff make it quite clear that Shimano had publicly announced their intention to bring out a 10mm pitch road drivetrain. The characteristics of the 3 mm width chain that you referenced are quite possibly immaterial, since Shimano may have intended to introduce a seperate multispeed chain.
