Those were pretty common posts in the late 80's and early 90's, and I have never seen one that broke. I've never seen one that was about to break. I've never heard of one failing, just lots of problems with slippage. The upper part of the post is just like SR, which is spuer common, and I've never seen one of those break. I think what you read is one of two things:

1) Some "highly qualified" engineer-type looked at the post and noticed how narrow it is where it curves back near the top and decided that it must be very weak in that area. This ignores the fact that these posts are SOLID aluminum from the "aero" section up, and if anything are overbuilt.

2) Someone has confused the 1985-1993-ish aero C-record post with some later ultralight Campy model. They made a titanium tubed post that didn't stay on the market long, if I'm not mistaken. There may have been problems with those.

I really think that you'd have seen more 'obsolete' NR and SR posts on pro bikes throughout the C-record era had the C-rec posts been failure prone.

All this having been said, with any aluminum part, it is always a matter of "when" rather than "if" due to the absence of a fatigue limit. It's just that the when may be a quintillion stress cycles while the expected service like is only a billion.

If you want to worry about post failures, look at just about any modern, ultralight tubular aluminum post. I heard tale of some poor MTB rider severing his femural artery on a broken Ringle Moby post. I heard this tale around the time that the main shaft of these posts nearly doubled in wall thickness, but who's to say it's true.
