I have used Rivendell Ruffy-Tuffy tires on 700C Super Champion 58 rims at 110 psi on a tandem. Maybe you have a bad match of rim and tire, and a different tire might be a good choice. In the latest Tour (German magazine) test, the Contis were very easy to mount (which seemed to be their only redeeming feature, as their rolling resistance was high, their cornering poor and their reliability just average). So a tire that is "less easy to mount" might fit better. Or you may have an undersize rim. But in theory, the Super Champions rims work as well as any new ones.
