Ours isn't the only hobby dealing with these issues. Car restorations done to the exacting standards of Pebble Beach Concours requires that SOME of the original panels remain; it does allow for replacement of some structural components, e.g. hand hammered alumimum panels, wooden chassis members, of which a number were replaced on the 1937 Delage that took top honors at Pebble Beach this year. No one complains that this automotive treasure is diminished because of the work done to bring it back from the automotive graveyard. Wooden boats face similar issues. An old Garwood runabout that has been neglected for decades is restored, with nearly all of its wooden hull replaced. The boat's return to its former glory is validated by the judges at one of the premier wooden boat concours d'elegance.
And yet there's some in our tiny little cul de sac of a hobby who turn their noses up at a bike with some reproduction parts that were destined to wear out long before the life span of the bike is reached.
