When I was in college (1972-5) and working in the summertime at an Adventure Playground in Crawley (West Sussex, UK), teenagers began 'BMX racing' on an oval track built by the local council next to the playground.

It was a new sport (to me, at least) but quite popular at the time, although I think it faded away again?

This was rather like (motorcycle) speedway racing, but on bicycles, where the track was surfaced with cinders - if I remember correctly.

The bikes were (sorry, OT) 20" fixed-wheel affairs, at this time they even predated the BMX craze, didn't they?
