Perhaps he was talking about another Merlin, such as one shown below from the Used Bike Buyers Guide. I believe the off-topic Merlin Titanium company didn't start until 1986, so if he had a Merlin from before 83, it wasn't by the boys in Mass. I think the agreed upon definition of a Keeper of the Flame would be lugged steel frame construction.
