Back in the day, if a rider won a world championship, any world championship in any discipline or rider category, that rider would often spend the rest of their career with the CdM stripes on the collar. Not always, but it was not an uncommon sight.

Today, it is more common that only pro CdM victories are memorialized. (Although some current riders also shank their jersey with national champion stripes or Olympic champion rings.)
