Subject: [CR]Lugless frames

I'can't get too excited about lugged frames. I have a 1978 Bill Philbrook and the lugs are filed and cut away so much that It is difficult to see what purpose they serve (other than decoration). All my later Philbrook's were lugless and in my view better for it. I have a 2002 Roberts that is lugless and very neatly done. It is Columbus Max tubing and they have used a matching bottom bracket shell (lugged)to take the oval down and seat tube. I'm certain that Bill Philbrook would have made the bottom bracket lugless as well. How much flexibility is their with angles on a lugged frame? Is it possible to build a "compact" like my Roberts? Not that I think many of you guys would want to! Ray Green, Brighton, England
