Following the latest long-term threads reminded me of something that I'd meant to ask since joining the group:

Why was 1983 picked as the cutoff date?

While I'm catching up on the technological changes of the last 30 years, I'm still somewhat in the dark as to the detailed chronological line of bicycle technology changes since I dropped out of the sport. What happened in 1984 that made it convenient to become the dividing line between classic bicycles and modern techno-wheels?
