A very sad day for cycling indeed. Charly was one of the few surviving champions from the golden era of cycling.
As a fan, I have always had an affinity for his racing style. The fact that he could win a TdF as a Luxembourg rider in the era of national rather than trade teams makes his victory all the more sweet. His 1956 Giro win is truly the stuff of legends. I am honored to have two of his original maglia rosa's (1956 & 1959) in my collection.
I wish I had made a bigger effort to get to know the man. He was always a bit of a recluse, and his appearances at functions were fleeting at best. I foolishly thought I had plenty of time. Just goes to show......................
God speed, Charly Gaul.
