This method works very well. I just recently opened up a pedal that had a "bump" every revolution. Sure enough, I had one ball out of place because I had assembled it wrong. (turning cone into balls-the grease can grab a ball out of it's spot in the race and there you go)

BTW: I think it's good practice to dis-assemble and thoroughly clean all used components as you really don't know their history)
