Gosh, you guys are tough. Unforgiving even. I think it's tres splendid e that Stephan put together this site on Gitane. And there's nothing wrong

with throwing in some good, meateating adjectives when we're talking about

racing bikes... "best", "greatest".. what's wrong with that? W hat's a sport without bravado or enthusiasm? It's all subjective. All depends on the era. And whilst Alcyon et. al. may be technically the one with the most win s (or it is Peugeot?).. gimme a break. I don't recall any discussion her e detailing the nuances of pre-1935 cycles or cycle racing. The point is t o get this stuff (especially the great catalogues that Stephan has scanned) on the web so we can all learn about these hitherto and remarkably underdocumented marques. And then argue if they really were the greatest or the best. Gitane wins hands down in the icky mid '1970s graphics though. . check out the '76 catalogue and the cool Brandy Bunch Era models, too!

Pity Stephan and I live on opposite coasts, though; I'd be more than happy

to match his Gitane Tour de France against my PX-10 anyday and really show

'em what the "best" and "greatest" French racing bike and team was... .
