I raced in the late 40s and early 50s in the Midlands,(NOW West Midlands) I NEVER used mudguards in ANY race, I ALLWAYS used them to train and ride to events, THEN I removed them and everything else I could, without the bike falling apart, for the race, Mudguards of any type caused wind restistance, ALSO the chap behind you gets all your spray in his face, anything to win RIGHT!!!!
