I have a small photo book"a Pictorial History of past riders and racers1930-1940" by Eric Auty that backs up what Mick said.About half of the photos show the spearpoint guard on the bikes. sam lingo,pleasanton tx

Full mudguards were still quite common in 12 and 24 hour time trials and in long distance record breaking attempts even in the 1960's. It is true that a lot of riders rode to events with guards fitted and then removed them for racing, Bates had the special wing nut quick release fitted on most of their frames for this very purpose. I am 58 in January and when I time trialed on my trike even in the 70's a lot of the older TT trike riders still had a short front guard fitted for racing.
