In the photos posted by Julian Sharpo, Beryl Burton is turning what appears to be massive gears--I'm guessing something like a 54/13. That scarcely seems possible for a solo ride of many, many hours. Was it common then in British time-trialling to turn big gears relatively slowly, or were they spinning, and rolling at a pace that I can only dream of? If I'm right abou t petite Beryl's ratio, what were the burly diesels pushing?
