Ah, that takes me back! That was my second derailer (replaced a Mk VII). The spring adjustment doesn't affect the position of the jockey pulley at all, since there is no "B" spring in this unit. Just adjust it tight enough that the chain doesn't droop too much in the slackest gear.

The "B" adjustment screw should be set if I recall the FM correctly, so that there's 1 1/2 links of straight chain between the jockey pulley and the biggest rear sprocket.

It appears from the photo that you could run it a wee bit higher...this would improve the shifting.

Also, looking at the photo, it appears that you have not done a good job of finshing off the end of the housing where it fits into the chainstay housing stop. It's really worthwhile taking it to a grinding wheel so that the end is flat and square.

The flat spring cover is the weak point on this type of derailer. You need to clean and oil it regularly. Also oil the toggle chain...looks too dry to me...

The Mk VIII is kinda overkill for that close-ratio freewheel, unless you have a big jump in front that needs the extra chain slack takeup capacity. If the front is also tight, you'ld be better off witha Mk. VII.
