According to my Columbus tubing catalog (http://www.os2.dhs.org/~john/catalogs/Columbus-tubes.pdf -- caution: 5.3MB download), Columbus started out in the early 20th century producing "special steel tubes for aeronautical and motor-car purposes" before diversifying into tubing for bicycle frames.
