I'm attempting to put an old Gitane TDF into riding shape for a friend, and the poor thing really was trashed.

It apparently came spec'd with a Sugino Mighty crank (the first-gen Campy knock-off). There are no pedals. The cranks are stamped: 47.8 171 M14.

I cannot get a pair of standard BSC threaded pedals into them. Is it possible that Gitane spec'd japanese cranks with french pedal threading? Only the French would do something that demented... the threads look ok...not ruined..

Any insights into this problem would be appreciated. Most unfortunately, I have no Sugino cranks around here right now, and I don't want to waste a set of Record cranks on this one..

Thanks.

Charles: I think the "M14" is a strong clue.... M14 x 1.25, that is! (At least Sugino was nice enough to clearly mark them). Nothing that a good set of 9/16" x 20 taps won't easily correct, however. (Mon Dieu! I can hear the Francophiles saying that quietly, to themselves). There are also lots of French-threaded NOS pedals out there, available from me or several others.
