Howard,

Thanks for letting me know about the obit - like you, I owe a lot to this guy, both for my initial riding in the 70's, as well as the fascination never quite dying and coming back this past year.

In my case, it wasn't only the birth of passion, but Merle was the guy who nurtured it along - as well as teaching me everything I know about wrenching a bicycle.

Hopefully word will get out to some of the other ex-employees.

I was in Erie PA last Wednesdayand tried to visit the store I first worked in, it was closed. Christmas day I saw his obituary in the Erie paper.

He was my first employer. Many of us in our mid forties that were lucky enough to work in a bike shop remember the birth of a passion and the owners that put up with us.
