Remember the Cyclo Pans freewheel kit (aka Milremo Alpine)? It came in a zippered pouch with a bunch of extra cogs and spacers as well as extra pawls and springs. Apparently as late as the '70's it was expected that one might rebuild a freewheel. One of our local gurus, Michael Coakly, used to routinely rebuild freewheels. I did a couple as a teenager with not great results. Probably not enough patience!
