For Campy hubs, one groove between the spoke flange and the freewheel threading indicates English threading. Both French and Italian are unmarked, but the size difference is readily apparent.

It should work either way, but switching back and forth from Italian to English freewheels on the same hub should be avoided. The difference between Italian and English freewheel threads is the thread angle: 55 degrees vs 60 degrees.
