Chuck Schmidt said: It's a simple matter to replace parts on a barely ridden bike (freewheel, chain, brake blocks, tires, etc) and then the bike is NOS? Is there a way to document that a bike has never been ridden?

I couldn't agree more. My purchased-as-NOS '73 LeJeune gets ridden (kinda gingerly), yet I think I could still make a case for NOS if called upon to fudge it. For example, more damage occurred in the shipping box from France than any of the careful rides on swept streets, etc that I have taken it on.

As to the scruples of attempted riding a bike such as this, I don't think they were tremendously rare as I sure saw my share of panto-ed Colnagos around Aspen especially when the Alpine 300 race came to town.

Ken Wehrenberg, Hermann, MO drooled then and can still drool now, but I'd ride it, too
