Jay,

My personal taste in Masi track bikes is like that of Dale P., in that the older Masi Specials are really cool machines. The bike for sale is still a genuine Masi track bike, but not the same object as an older Italian built Special or even the few custom track bikes Mario built while at Masi. Actually, I'd put those two on par with each other for the most part. The bike up for auction is probably a Ted Kirkbride built Masi. Nothing wrong with that at all, but the actual MOJO factor isn't the same as the other bikes.

John J. mentioned that there may have been some post-Mario Carlsbad track bikes built; but I don't think there were any made while I was there the second time between June '76 and whenever the workshop closed in Carlsbad sometime in '77. The fixtureing was not set up for track bikes. When Mario built them he used the "other" method of piecing them together primarily without major fixtures. I believe by the time Ted was building a few bikes they had abandoned the old fixtureing and had gone to a fixture that was ajustable to all frame angles as opposed to the original fixture that could only build the one frame standard per size with the standard geometry.
