Harvey asked:

Does the rest of the world just clamp on down till it is real tight (the way I do at the other end of the stem, so the bars don't rotate when I stand and apply the Mighty Thrust of the 61 year old body)?

No, too tight will not allow the stem to twist in the steerer during a crash and can thereby contribute to fork damage. I never even thought about my body. Good point.

Also, I have seen steerers bulge from overtightened plug type binders. Did it to one of my own bikes in my torque-happy youth.
