Bikes for Sale

With three new bikes either here or arriving soon, some space has to be cleared. Therefore the following two fine machines are offered for sale. Bikes can be delivered to the Westminister swap, dropped off in the NY metro area, or deposited at the Bike Stand in Scotch Plains NJ for you to collect. Shipping is not included in the price, and I would strongly prefer not to ship a whole bike.

1. 1975 Gitane Tour De France. Mine for 3 years. No original parts on it except for the headset. Green with half chromed stays and a warranty replacement fully chromed fork (with French Reynolds stickers and French threads). Paint shows it age and has faded, some rust speckling on the chrome, decals are there and legible but have tears and wrinkles. Reynolds frame sticker is 98% gone, but you can see where it was. TDF’s were full tubeset DB 531. No braze ons except for a DT stop for clamp on shift levers and fender eyelets. Built up with a Stronglight 99 triple crank, 170mm, English threads, 50x40x30 rings, the big ring is factory drilled. Simplex SX410 rear mech, the long cage vertical parallelogram touring version of the SLJ. Front mech is a metal Simplex, probably an SLJ. Shifters are Huret Barcons. Brakes are Weinman 610 centerpulls with drilled Weinman levers. Wheels are Dura Ace 1st gen hubs laced to Mavic MA3 silver rims. Hubs have the oil hole covers. You can have a Pellesier tubular wheel set if you prefer. Bar/stem are Nitto, the stem is the Nitto I-beam that Rivendell sold a few years ago, sanded down to fit the steerer. Bars are 25.4 Nitto Maes bend, 44cm wide. Parts are well used by fully functional. Zefal fenders. Bike rides wonderfully, here’s your chance to experience the magic French ride on the cheap. I sold my PX-10 when I got this baby. ST 62.5 c-c, TT 59cm c-c, chainstays 43 cm, wheelbase 103cm. Lots of fender room, would be a great audax/touring bike. $600 full bike, $100 frame + headset.

2. Stan Pike Touring/Audax. This one hurts, but you can’t keep them all, and I’ve got a Pike Racer. There’s a bit of history with this one. It was offered to me as a reclamation project. The bike had been in a front ender, and the top and down tubes were slightly bent at the head lugs. I had the seller send the bike to Bob Jackson’s for evaluation. They felt the bike could be straightened and be quite ridable, but of course not perfect. Feeling that a Pike deserves better, I had Jackson’s replace the top and down tube before respraying the bike. Fork is a replacement (may be a Pike but I don’t know). It's lovely, high quality and rides fine. Rear drops are chrome Campy verticals. Color is Jackson’s forest green metallic, with gold lug lining. Jackson’s had the replacement Pike transfers. Old style Reynolds full 531 DB frame sticker, modern 531 fork leg decals (don’t ask me why). Bike probably has a thousand miles on it, so some marks on the paint. One chip on the seat tube, one teeny dent just above the chip. Bike is built up with a modern Ritchey triple crank 175mm arms, 52x42x30 rings, square taper BB, Cyclone GT rear mech and Cyclone front changer, Suntour Barcons, Shimano XT wide legged cantilevers with Shimano 600 drilled levers, wheels are Galli badged Maillard low flange hubs laced to Sun CR 18 rims. Headset is a Campy NR. Seat post is a Ritchey, saddle a brooks B17 standard, small rivet black rails. Lots of brazeons: Canti bosses of course, a rear brake cable stop/bridge, rack eyelets on the rear stays, fender eyelets, down tube gear lever clamp pip, under BB cable routing. Wonderful riding bike, I had it at Dan Artley’s rainy ride last fall. Fairly short WB, hence I think it’s more of an Audax machine than a touring bike. Seat tube is 24.5 inches c-t, TT is 58cm, chainstays are 16.5 inches (hence the vertical drops), 101 cm wheelbase. Fenders are possible, but tight, and lots of toe overlap in front. Here’s your chance to sample the Stan Pike magic. Parts were either NOS or excellent when installed, bike probably has only 1,000 miles on it. $1,200 full bike, $700 frame and fork. Obviously I'm selling at a loss just from the paint and repairs. Pictures are at:
