Thank you for all the replies. What I did yesterday when I repacked the bearings was use q-tip and clean with a liberal application of degreaser (and it wasn't all that greasy in there). The races shine like new and no pitting (pretty neat for a 37 year old hub). I'd always thought that these were press in seals but when I looked at the hub it almost looks like I can see threads, which is why I asked about the drift etc. Probably should have checked archives first anyhow. . . monday morning laziness I suppose.
