Lighter fluid or, more economically, naptha from the hardware store, a good handful of cotton rags and elbow grease works for me. I don't always remove all of the existing bed if it isn't covered with dog hairs, grit, etc. but use it to knock down lumps and/or reduce thickness. If the remaining glue has good tack after this process, a single application of new Vittoria Mastik 1 or Conti goes down and two on the tire base tape.

I simply love tubulars / sewups / sprints.
