Subject: [CR]Eddy Merckx trivia

Further to the post about Rik II and team name on the rainbow jersey I checked out Big Ted. He won the Worlds in 67 at Heerlen (I was there) while riding for Peugeot and his rainbow jersey was clean. In 68 he transferred to Faema and the FAEMA name was despoiling the jersey. So much for Italian style. Looking through the old mags I came across a photo of Merckx riding the GP E3 (named after a freeway!) in March 1968. He is on a plain white bike-no red headtube, no name on down tube- fitted with Universal centre-pull brakes. I can't find many photos of 68, I guess that is because by the standards of the Special One it was a lean year. He only won 32 of the 129 races he started! His best year was 1971, 54 wins out of 120 starts !! Yet there are apparently sane people who place L.A. in the same league. How crazy is that? Anyhow use those Universals 61s with pride, they are endorsed by Eddy. Ray Green, Brighton, England
