This is the 49D on my Sachs tourer: http://community.webshots.com/photo/74 169800/1376874237040632288msalCB It's not an original 49D setup, but certainly available to anyone of the period. I first got the idea from a gent I met on Bike Virginia who had an original 70's Serotta tourer who had his bike built up that way. He told me that it was a recommended item back then. I'd never heard of it, originally building mine up w/ just TA, but I was jealous, only having my cranks as Campy Record drilled for a 74 mm bolt circle for its granny w/ Avocet ring. Those cranks definitely have some beef to them and I'm pleased with the way they've been working with my old polished up TA chainrings.

The Campy setup sure is pretty too, but a 28 tooth chainring allows the chain to get trapped between it and the spider, an absolute B*tch! to get out.

Happy trails,

The mod 99, of which I've seen many, is much more common in America. Was the 49D Tri just a mod 49D with an additional

ring? Did the inner ring attach at a smaller BCD than the middle? If the same bolts secured the middle and inner rings, small ring would have been limited to 36T, as the middle (inner on a double) ring on mod 49D was 122 BCD.
