When I had a custom-made frame done for me by a reputed British builder back in 1977, the frame cost me C$450 and the complete bike added up to C$1400.

I remember clearly how many well-meaning adult wags (friends' parents) said to me; "Why, you could get a really good used car for that price!"

To which I would reply: "You should see what kind of bike I could've had for C$4000."

I think the standard holds still.

A first-class KOF bicycle may cost as much as a good used car -- that's still fair, in my book.

But $20K seems a little over the edge of reason.
