I second that, and add. Michele Fanini, a very expert mechanic who has been working on bikes all his life, once taught me to use fluid oil to grease cables and housing. He said that any grease would dry and ultimately thicken, much the same way headset bearings get stuck, if not serviced, hence causing races to get pitted .
