1) No the Cyclone did not use the low normal and there was a low end front derailleur, maybe the Suntour 7 that did not. The Cyclone could be fitted with a very rare cage extension to use as a wide range derailleur. I would recommend a Campy 980 though for something effective and cheap.

2) Yes

3) Even the Cyclone with the extension would be pushing it at 28 teeth. The Huret Challenger/Success or whatever with the hinged front is the champion in my book for touring triples, but rather hard to find.

Subject: [CR]Vintage Suntour Front DR Questions

> Hi Folks,

\r?\n>

\r?\n> When building up my latest project, a '76 Jack Taylor, I discovered

\r?\n> that my plan to use an NR front derailleur was not going to work

\r?\n> with the 52/44/28 crankset as the cage is just not long enough. I

\r?\n> had used it with a 52/47/36 in the past but maybe that is the limit

\r?\n> (unless you go to a smaller big ring). Since I planned on using

\r?\n> Suntour Barcons and Suntour freewheel I was thinking that I might

\r?\n> as well use period Suntour derailleurs as well. I have 3 or 4 V-GT

\r?\n> and V-GT Luxe rear derailleurs and they do shift nicely but other

\r?\n> than that I really don't have much experience with vintage Japanese

\r?\n> components. What would be a good Suntour front derailleur to look

\r?\n> for to match the V-GT rear, perhaps a "7", a "Compe-V", or "SL"?

\r?\n> Further questions:

\r?\n>

\r?\n> 1. Did all Suntour front dr's of the era ('75 to '80) use the funky

\r?\n> pull for low scheme?

\r?\n>

\r?\n> 2. Did they all have adequate throw for a triple crankset?

\r?\n>

\r?\n> 3. Are the cages longer than the NR to allow the 28T chainring to

\r?\n> be used without chain drag?

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Thanks!
