"After following the all the interesting various views and comments on the subject I have always thought that the conventional cycle shoe and cleats should be used when riding the classic cycle. "

Shoes, yes. Cleats, maybe. I couldn't imagine riding a classic lightwe ight without clips, straps 'n black leather shoes with the tiny holes in them.

And starting up from a standstill without that uber annoying "clacking" sound of modern.. well whatever those lime green jogging shoes stuck o n thingys are. But personally, I've never gotten used to cleats and don't use 'em. Get along quite well with reasonably tight straps and Detto Pietros

but with the leather not plastic soles. You put a bit more wear on the t oes and also on the toe-clips but without that feeling of being "trapped" somehow. It cannot be that unusual... most Italian cycle shoe comp anies had models designed to be worn sans cleats. And if you had thin heels to the se, you can actually walk on them more than 20 yards.

Socks: when did cycling socks get so short?? I was watching my favouri te cycling films of the '60 and '62 London-Holyhead races and noted that sock s were rather higher than they are. That and the fact that only one of the 40 odd riders had anything remotely like a cool pair of shades on. Cycling fashion does indeed change with time...
