This discussion again raises the issue of "riding" vs. aesthetics. Although in the minds of many on this list these are inseparable, there are occasions where certain "new" developments have allowed some to ride in greater comfort. Until a few years ago, I had always ridden with clips, straps, and cleats. For over twenty years I used the same shoes - a pair of Adidas Eddy Merckx. In that time I replaced the cleats only once (these same cleats are on the shoes - now so badly worn down that the screws can no longer be extracted). I was very careful to try and position them right and they served me well for many years. However, when I got back into cycling after a long hiatus I found myself suffering severe pain in my knee (ACL - I believe) - partly due to an ugly soccer challenge (but that is another story). I found that the fixed nature of the cleats etc. worsened the pain. I decided to give clipless a try (after persuasion from fellow lister David Bilenkey) and found that the floating action allows to me to move enough to prevent my knee from locking and stiffening.

Of course, now, as I get older I might be tempted to simply use touring shoes with clips and straps - without cleats. For the sort of riding I do this would be more than adequate. However, I liked the efficiency of cleats and now like the comfort and efficiency of clipless pedals.

Do I prefer the look of clips and straps on classic bikes? Almost certainly! But, is it about riding or is it about looking the part?

Now if only I could find a way of alleviating a chronic neck problem I might be able to get back on a bike and ride with more comfort!
