I've enjoyed all the posts on pedals and toe clips, etc. Bruce Gordon's strapless clips are pretty slick. They are a refinement on clips of the turn of century, and the Christophe, KKT, more recent ones. To put your foot in a nice position for more positive pedaling and to keep your foot in place when riding at regular touring and commuting use, these are ideal. One loses the up pull, but at lower cadence and the advantage of having nice low gears to choose from, it solves the problem. I myself have never ridden clipless pedal systems. It could be VERY dangerous to but one's foot down while taking a spill. If ones foot gets caught on something, something could easily snap from foot to hip. Not for me. I'd rather go down with my ship, keep my leg and foot closer to bike and take the road rash, get up and keep riding. Usualy if it's a bad spill, the impact will stretch the leather just enough so the foot comes out after crunch so it solves the problem of escape, but at a far better time in the sequence. Every once in a while, guys would have too deep cleat slots or strap so tight that their foot would come out of the pedal and they would be sitting on ground in their stocking foot! That's why you wear a glove, as you go down you try to get your hand down to protect your self. If you go down so fast that you can't make a protective reaction, then it don't mean jack whether you have clip or clipless, and I'd rather have my leg not flying around too loosely. Sounds rather questionable to me, some strapless, some strapped in, putting on leathers, chain wear, hmmm. Ted Ernst Palos Verdes Estates, CA
