Have done a little bit more sleuthing on Marcel Guimbretiere the French 6 Day rider who was very popular in the States. You pronounce his surname Gam-bretty-air. Born in Brittany, believe I have already posted his DOB. He was known as "The Flying Sailor" for he first learned to ride a bicycle on a battleship whilst doing his National Service. After winning everything as an amateur he turned Pro very early. He rode the 1939 Wembley (London) 6 Day with Alfred Letourner anyone know where they finished? Alfred rode mostly in the USA well known for his insistence for wearing the No.13 jersey, this despite having many serious crashes whilst clad in this jersey, the most serious was at Buffalo in 1939. He was also the American motor-Paced Champion and Record holder for many years. As a point of interest Karel Kars rode a Rudge Super Sports Aero Path Model 95 and Charlie Helps & Joseph Vroomen rode Dayton's in the 39 Wembley 6. Isn't this the same race that Piet Van Kempen & Cees Pellenaers rode Vibrant (Curly) Hetchins? Or was that 1937? Yours fraternally Frank.
