Routing the strap this way gets it behind the widest part of the foot, reducing the possible pressure from the buckle (less of an issue if you set the buckle high, or closer to the toe clip) and probably increasing retention as well. I always found it difficult to get used to the entry technique when I tried this style.

Anyone notice how the toe straps are routed through the back of the pedal cage?

I always associated this with Colnagos but probably more of an Italian thing like front brake / right lever?
